Opportunity Description

The Chevening Scholarship is an international scholarship that allows international students with leadership potential to study at institutions in the UK. It is supported by the British Foreign and Commonwealth Office.

Application are invited for Chevening South Asia Journalism Fellowship (SAJP). Mid-career journalists from South Asian nations such as Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Nepal, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, and the Maldives are the target audience for the Chevening South Asia Journalism Fellowship (SAJP).

The University of Westminster is the fellowship’s host institution. The custom 8-week fellowship that fellows will do is titled “Good Governance in a Changing World: The Media, Politics, and Society.” The program examines the many roles that the media play in keeping democratic institutions accountable, including the government, the civil service, security, and the more extensive political system in both the UK and South Asia. During this program, fellows will investigate the strategies used by the UK and the South Asian area, using their findings to guide talks that address the industry’s major problems.

Fellows will be required to provide practical experience, grasp international viewpoints (including an understanding of UK methods), the present evidence-based context for important policy debates, and promote discussion on important topics.

The curriculum emphasizes how the media are held accountable and the larger framework in which political institutions function. All discussions center on the ethics of reporting. Fellows will take part in eight intense weeks of lectures, excursions, and debates that will familiarize them with important UK academics, members of the media, and politicians who are active in the subject. Along with organizing a symposium on a topic of their choice in the last week, they will also meet their peers from some of the leading media organizations in the UK.

Special Note For Afghan Nationals:

The government of the United Kingdom and Chevening are fully committed to the safety and security of Afghans living in Afghanistan.

The FCDO has completed a full assessment of the feasibility of offering eligible Afghans the chance to apply for a 2025/2026 Chevening Scholarship.

Prospective candidates residing in Afghanistan would likely face serious security risks and financial and logistical implications.

As a result, Chevening offers Afghans who reside outside of Afghanistan the opportunity to apply for a Chevening Scholarship or Fellowship to study in the UK.

For the academic year 2025/2026, Chevening will only accept applications from Afghans who are living in a UK Overseas Development Aid eligible country, other than Afghanistan. This decision might go under review for the 2026/2027.

If you want to apply for a Chevening Scholarship or Fellowship, please note the following:

  1. Applicants should provide proof they are legally living in an ODA eligible country other than Afghanistan.
  2. A Chevening Scholarship does not offer resettlement to the UK and students should follow standard Chevening policy once they’ve completed their studies.
