Benefits and Financial Aids

Eligibility Criteria

- Applications are open to graduates of any university within or outside New Zealand
- Applicants must enroll full-time for a Doctorate (PhD) at Victoria University of Wellington
- Scholarships are available to those beginning or currently enrolled in their doctoral studies
- Scholarships are awarded based on academic merit; therefore, a strong academic record and references are necessary
- Potential for high-quality research or a record of publication in high-quality journals considered
- Alignment with the university’s research interests may influence selection
- Must include academic records from previous institutions if applicable
- Current academic staff at any university cannot hold the scholarship
- Applicants must meet eligibility to register as a doctoral candidate within three months of application
- Applicants should have completed a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree with academic distinction equivalent to a First Class Honours degree at a New Zealand University
Selection Process
The selection process is as follows:
- Final selection by the Victoria Research Scholarships Committee
- Applicants nominated by the relevant School and Faculty
- Offers made approximately six weeks after each closing date (March, July, November)
- Further offers may be made if initial offers are declined
- Final notifications may take up to three months after application
How to Apply?
- Please complete the online application form by 4:30 p.m. on the closing date (1 March, 1 July, 1 November).
- Ensure all required supporting documents, including references, are submitted by the deadline.
- Await notification by email regarding the outcome of your application within six to eight weeks of the closing date.
- If successful, sign the Wellington Doctoral Research Scholarship Contract and commence your studies within the stipulated timeframe.
